As representatives of the Chemical Society of the Republic of Moldova, we express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent reform in the field of science, initiated by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC). This reform, although designed with the intention of modernizing and streamlining scientific research in our country, generated a strong negative reaction among the academic community, including within our community of chemists.
One of the most alarming aspects of the reform is the partial disappearance of some research institutes, following their absorption by universities. This measure, instead of promoting collaboration and optimization of resources, led to a significant decrease in the autonomy of research institutes and endangered the quality of scientific research.
Moreover, MEC's intention to liquidate scientific centers and laboratories within institutes and universities, under the pretext of self-administration of researchers, is a deeply wrong approach. This approach is equivalent to depriving universities of vital structures such as departments, faculties and chairs.
It is also worrying that the reform does not ensure the adequate remuneration of project managers and renowned scientists. We note with sadness that some of the most experienced and respected researchers are either forced to retire or are paid substantially below their due level.
The reform was implemented without proper consultation with the scientific community, which is a violation of the fundamental principles of transparency and collaboration essential to scientific progress.
We also note the passive position adopted by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in this process, an attitude possibly influenced by the recent internal elections.
In conclusion, we join the academic community in asking the government of Moldova to re-evaluate this reform and work closely with the scientific community to ensure a prosperous future for scientific research in our country.
